Chennai to Ayodhya: Flights & Travel Planning
At roughly 1,900 km, this is the longest domestic trip in our book. Ayodhya is a fly-in destination from Chennai, and the planning that matters is about how many days you give it.
Getting there
Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) is about 10 km from the temple. Direct services from Chennai are not reliable year-round, so plan on connecting:
- Fly Chennai → Delhi, then to AYJ. Usually the most dependable combination.
- Fly to Lucknow (LKO) and drive in — about 140 km, three hours by car.
- Fly to Varanasi (VNS) and drive — about 200 km, four to five hours. Sensible if you want both cities.
Realistic door-to-door: seven to nine hours. That is a full day each way, and it should decide how long you stay.
By train it is a two-day journey with most connections. Fly.
How many nights
Three nights minimum. Do not attempt two.
The distance makes a short trip pointless — two nights means two full days of travel for one day at the temple. Three nights gives you two full days in Ayodhya, which is what the journey justifies.
Four nights adds Varanasi or Prayagraj as a proper day out. If you are coming this far, this is the one to pick.
What to book before you fly
- 1 Darshan slot — the Sugam Darshan pass is free and opens about 15 days ahead on the Trust's portal. We secure it for clients at no charge for the pass.
- 2 Hotel — see where to stay in Ayodhya.
- 3 Airport transfer — pre-book it. Ayodhya's airport is small and taxis are scarce when flights land together, so this matters more here than in a metro. Our taxi service covers AYJ, LKO and VNS.
- 4 Return flight — arrange it with the outbound.
A four-night plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly in, transfer, settle, evening at Ram Ki Paidi. |
| Day 2 | Hanuman Garhi, Ram Mandir darshan, Saryu Aarti. |
| Day 3 | Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal, Nageshwarnath, Guptar Ghat. |
| Day 4 | Day trip to Prayagraj or Varanasi. |
| Day 5 | Morning darshan, then fly home. |
For three nights, drop day four. Our four-day Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi package is built on the longer shape.
Food and language
Ayodhya is vegetarian and dry — no alcohol in the city, and most restaurants near the temple are sattvic. Tamil food is not available. Expect North Indian thalis and hotel restaurants; if specific food matters, choose a hotel with its own kitchen.
Tamil is not spoken here. English works at hotels and with any operator you book through, and our coordinators speak English and Hindi.
Weather — the thing that catches people out
Ayodhya has a real winter, and Chennai does not. December and January mornings are genuinely cold, often single digits, and the temple floor at dawn is cold on bare feet. Bring a jacket, socks and a warm layer you would never pack for home.
Summer is the reverse problem — May and June are very hot and dry. Do the temple at dawn, rest through the middle of the day, and go back out in the evening.
Monsoon, July to September, brings heavy rain and a Saryu running high. The city is at its greenest and emptiest then, but some ghats get slippery.
Combining with the rest of a pilgrimage
If you are doing a wider circuit, Ayodhya pairs naturally with Varanasi, Prayagraj, and onward to Kedarnath and Badrinath. Our Do Dham package covers the Himalayan leg over seven days.
