Kolkata to Ayodhya: Train, Flight & Travel Guide
Ayodhya is around 900 km from Kolkata. Closer than the southern metros, but still far enough that the journey shapes the trip. Here is how each option actually works out.
By train
There are direct and single-connection services from Howrah and Sealdah towards Ayodhya Dham Junction and the surrounding stations, and the journey is generally 12 to 16 hours. For a lot of people from Kolkata this is the natural choice — an overnight train, arrive in the morning, and you have not spent a day in transit.
Two things to weigh:
- You are tied to the timetable. During festival weeks the darshan queue runs long, and a fixed return train with no slack is a genuine risk.
- Book the return leg when you book the outbound. This is the most common mistake on this route — people arrive, enjoy the trip, and then find nothing available back for two days.
By air
Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) is about 10 km from the temple. Direct services from Kolkata vary with the season, so in practice:
- Fly Kolkata → Delhi or Lucknow, then on to AYJ.
- Fly to Lucknow (LKO) and drive — about 140 km, roughly three hours. Often the cheapest combination.
- Fly to Varanasi (VNS) and drive — around 200 km, four to five hours. The best option if you want to see both cities.
By air, door to door: five to six hours including connections. By train, 12 to 16 hours but you sleep through most of it.
Our view: if you can get a comfortable overnight train, take it. If not, fly to Lucknow and drive in.
How many nights
Two nights minimum, three preferred. The journey is shorter than from the southern metros, so two nights is workable here, but it still leaves only one full day.
Should you break the journey?
If you are going by train, Varanasi is the natural break — it is a few hours from Ayodhya and worth a day of anyone's trip. Our Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi package runs the whole circuit over four days and takes the logistics off your hands.
Putting Varanasi and Ayodhya in one trip is what most people from Kolkata do, and it makes the travel time feel worthwhile.
What to book first
- 1 Your darshan slot. The Sugam Darshan pass is free and opens about 15 days ahead. We can secure it for you.
- 2 Accommodation — see where to stay in Ayodhya.
- 3 Transfers — the airport and station are not close to the temple area, and you will want a car waiting. Our taxi service covers AYJ, LKO, VNS and the stations.
Practical notes for Bengali travellers
Ayodhya is vegetarian and dry — no alcohol, and most temple-area restaurants are sattvic. Bengali food is not widely available; expect North Indian thalis near the temple and hotel restaurants for anything more specific. If food matters to your trip, pick a hotel with its own kitchen rather than relying on what is within walking distance.
Hindi and Awadhi are the languages of the street, with English at hotels. Our coordinators speak English and Hindi.
Winter mornings here are cold — noticeably colder than Kolkata. A jacket for early darshan is not optional in December and January.
