Pune to Ayodhya: Flights, Trains & Trip Planning
Ayodhya is roughly 1,500 km from Pune, which puts it in the category of trips that need planning rather than a long weekend. This covers how to get there, and how many nights the journey actually justifies.
Getting there
Flying is the sensible option. Ayodhya's own airport, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), is about 10 km from the temple, but direct services from Pune are limited and change with the season. In practice most people do one of these:
- Fly Pune → Delhi or Lucknow, then on to AYJ. Usually the best combination of choice and price.
- Fly to Lucknow (LKO) and drive. Lucknow is roughly 140 km from Ayodhya, about three hours by car. Often the cheapest route and it gives you a proper look at the countryside on the way in.
- Fly to Varanasi (VNS). Around 200 km, four to five hours by car. Worth it if you want to combine Ayodhya with Varanasi, which many people do.
Total door-to-door time: five to eight hours, depending on connections. That is a full travel day in each direction, and it should shape how long you stay.
By train is possible but long — a day and a half or more with most connections, and Pune's rail links to this part of Uttar Pradesh are not direct. Unless you specifically want the train journey, fly.
How many nights you need
Three nights is the right answer. Two is the floor.
- Two nights gives you one full day in Ayodhya. Enough for darshan and the Saryu Aarti if nothing goes wrong. Tight, and after that journey it feels rushed.
- Three nights gives you two full days — darshan without sprinting, the older temples, an unhurried evening at the ghats. This is what we recommend.
- Four nights lets you add Varanasi or Prayagraj without cutting anything.
The mistake to avoid is spending two full days travelling for one day at the destination. Our two-day itinerary shows what the extra day buys you.
What to book before you fly
- 1 Your darshan slot. The Sugam Darshan pass is free and opens roughly 15 days before your date. Our Sugam Darshan guide explains the process, and we can book it for you.
- 2 The hotel. See where to stay in Ayodhya — the areas differ more than the prices suggest.
- 3 The airport transfer. Ayodhya's airport is small and taxis are limited when flights land together, so pre-booking matters more here than in a big city. We do pickups from AYJ, LKO and VNS — see our taxi service.
- 4 Your return flight. Ayodhya is not a place to be working out a ticket home.
A three-night shape
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly in, transfer, settle. Evening at Ram Ki Paidi. |
| Day 2 | Hanuman Garhi, Ram Mandir darshan, Saryu Aarti. |
| Day 3 | Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal, Nageshwarnath, Guptar Ghat. |
| Day 4 | Morning darshan if you want a second, then fly home. |
That is the shape of our Ram Mandir VIP Darshan tour, which is three days for exactly this reason.
Food, language and practicalities
Ayodhya is vegetarian and dry — no alcohol in the city, and most restaurants near the temple are sattvic, meaning no onion or garlic. Marathi and Hindi both work in the market; English works at hotels and with anyone you book through, and our coordinators speak English, Hindi and Marathi.
Ayodhya is also cooler than Pune in winter and hotter in summer. December and January mornings are genuinely cold — you will want a jacket for early darshan. Through May and June, do the temple early and stay in during the afternoon.
Combining the trip
Pune → Ayodhya works well as one leg of a longer pilgrimage. Varanasi is four to five hours from Ayodhya by road, and Prayagraj about three. Our Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi package runs that whole loop over four days.
