How to Reach Ayodhya: Trains, Flights, Road & Local Transport (2026 Guide)
Ayodhya used to be a place you reached by an overnight train and a shared auto. Not any more. The city now has its own airport, a rebuilt railway station, and expressways that put it within a half-day's drive of half of North India. Reaching Ram Lalla has never been easier — but the options are genuinely different, and picking the wrong one costs you a day.
Here is every practical way in, honestly compared.
Which way should you choose?
| Mode | Best from | Time to Ayodhya | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj | 2–8.5 hours | You want comfort without airport transfers, or you're travelling on a budget |
| Flight | Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru (via Ayodhya's own airport) | 1h 20m from Delhi | Your time is worth more than the fare |
| Flight via Lucknow | International arrivals, Gulf routes | 2h 15m drive after landing | You want the shortest total journey from abroad |
| Road | Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Delhi | 2.5–8 hours | You're already in the region, or want to stop en route |
| Bus | Lucknow, Varanasi, Delhi | Overnight or half-day | Cheapest option; night buses arrive by morning |
1. By train: the two stations matter
Ayodhya has two railway stations, and knowing which one your train uses saves confusion:
- Ayodhya Dham Junction (AY) — the new, rebuilt station. Clean, modern, and the one most new trains use.
- Ayodhya Cantt (AYC) — the older station, still used by many long-distance trains.
Both are a short auto or e-rickshaw ride from the Ram Mandir area; your hotel pickup can meet you at either (we do — see our taxi service).
The fast option from Delhi: the Vande Bharat Express (22426) leaves Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT) at 06:10 AM and reaches Ayodhya Cantt at 02:30 PM — 8 hours 20 minutes, chair car and executive class, meals on board. The return (22425) departs Ayodhya Cantt at 03:20 PM. It runs six days a week (not Wednesday).
From Lucknow: frequent trains cover the 135 km in about 2 to 3 hours — the easy connection if you're flying into Lucknow.
From Varanasi and Prayagraj: short hops of 2 to 4 hours, ideal as part of a circuit.
Book early. IRCTC opens booking 60 days ahead, and for Deepotsav and Ram Navami weeks the good trains fill within days. If you're planning around a festival, read our Deepotsav 2026 guide first.
2. By flight: Ayodhya now has its own airport
Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) is about 15 minutes from Ram Mandir. IndiGo and SpiceJet operate direct flights from Delhi in 1 hour 20 minutes, with services from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and more through the week.
For international arrivals, two gateways make sense:
- Delhi (DEL) — the main global gateway. Connect to the 1h 20m hop to AYJ, or drive (see road section).
- Lucknow (LKO) — the closest big airport to Ayodhya, 135 km away, roughly 2h 15m by road. Most Gulf routes (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha) connect usefully through Lucknow.
Fares to AYJ jump in festival weeks and around school holidays — book early, or let our desk book at live airline rates with no markup games. First-time international visitors should start with the Dubai & Gulf guide or the USA guide depending on where they are flying from.
3. By road: distances and real driving times
| From | Distance | Time | Route notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucknow | 135 km | ≈ 2h 15m | NH 27 — the smoothest approach |
| Prayagraj | 165 km | ≈ 3h | Good highway; easy add-on to a Varanasi trip |
| Varanasi | ≈ 200 km | ≈ 4h | Combine with Kashi on the same trip |
| Delhi NCR | ≈ 600+ km | ≈ 8h | Agra–Lucknow Expressway + Purvanchal Expressway — genuinely fast driving |
Two things to know when you arrive by car: parking is outside the Ram Mandir perimeter (battery E-carts take you the last stretch), and on festival peak days there are traffic diversions around Ram Path and the ghats — a driver who knows the festival routes saves hours. Ours do.
By bus: UPSRTC and private operators run frequent services from Lucknow, Varanasi and Delhi. Overnight buses arrive in the early morning, which pairs well with a same-day darshan.
4. Getting around once you are here
- E-rickshaws and autos handle most short hops cheaply — Ram Path, Kanak Bhawan and Hanuman Garhi are all within a compact, partly walkable cluster.
- Battery E-carts at the Ram Mandir perimeter are the difference between a pleasant darshan and a 2 km walk in the sun — especially for parents. Our VIP darshan experience includes them.
- AC cabs for full days, airport transfers and outstation runs to Varanasi, Prayagraj or Lucknow — see Ayodhya taxi service.
- Peak days: during Deepotsav week, movement at Ram Ki Paidi is one-way and road closures ripple across the city — plan to arrive a day early and walk more than you expect.
5. When to come
October to March is the comfortable window. Deepotsav (expected 7–9 November 2026) is the most spectacular week of the year and the one where rooms genuinely sell out two to three months ahead. Ram Navami in March–April is the other big festival, with the longest temple queues. May and June cross 40°C — avoid them if you can, especially with children or elderly parents. More detail in our best time to visit Ayodhya guide.
6. After you arrive: darshan and stay
Two things decide how smooth the actual pilgrimage is:
- 1 Your darshan slot. Sugam Darshan slots open roughly 15 days ahead and vanish quickly in festival weeks — the process is explained in our Sugam Darshan pass guide.
- 2 Where you stay. Rooms near Ram Path are the convenient ones and the first to sell out; our verified hotels all have lifts and hot water, which matters more than it sounds. For neighbourhood comparisons, see where to stay in Ayodhya.
Let us handle the logistics
If you would rather not assemble all of this yourself: we are a local Ayodhya agency, and arranging exactly this — airport and station pickups, hotels, AC cabs, darshan coordination and E-carts — is what we do all day. Tell us where you are coming from and when, and you will get an honest, specific answer about what works. Start with our tour packages, the city-to-city tours, or just message our desk.
