Lucknow to Ayodhya: Cab, Train and Day Trip Guide
Lucknow is the closest big city to Ayodhya, and for anyone already in the state capital the trip is short enough to consider. Here is how it works in practice.
The distance
About 140 km, which is 2.5 to 3 hours by car on a normal day. Traffic leaving Lucknow in the morning and around the temple approach in Ayodhya are the two things that add time. Allow three hours and you will not be stressed.
By car
The most flexible option, and the one most people choose for a day trip. A private cab gives you door-to-door service, lets you stop for breakfast, and means you are not tied to a train timetable when the darshan queue runs long.
Cost depends on the vehicle. A sedan suits two or three people; an Innova or Ertiga suits a family with luggage. See our taxi service for the current vehicles and rates, and tell us your luggage — this is the one detail people forget when booking a car.
By train
Frequent services connect Lucknow with Ayodhya, including to Ayodhya Dham Junction, and the journey is quick. It is a good choice if you are travelling light and heading straight for the temple.
Two things to weigh:
- You are tied to the schedule. If your darshan slot runs late — and during festival weeks it will — you will miss your booked return train.
- Station to temple transfer. You still need a car or auto at both ends, which reduces the saving.
If you take the train, book the return leg when you book the outbound one.
Is a day trip realistic?
Yes, but only just, and only outside festival weeks. A workable one-day plan from Lucknow:
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 06:00 | Leave Lucknow |
| 09:00 | Arrive Ayodhya, Hanuman Garhi |
| 11:00 | Ram Mandir darshan |
| 13:30 | Lunch |
| 15:00 | Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal |
| 17:00 | Ram Ki Paidi and the Saryu |
| 18:30 | Saryu Aarti |
| 19:30 | Drive back, reaching Lucknow around 22:30 |
It is a long day and it leaves no margin for a slow queue. If your darshan takes four hours instead of two, you will be driving back late.
Our honest recommendation: stay one night. Two days and one night turns the same trip from a rush into something you will remember properly, and the added cost of a room is small compared with the value of not being exhausted. Our two-day itinerary shows what the extra day buys you.
Combining Lucknow with the rest of a tour
Lucknow works well as the start or end of a longer circuit. Varanasi is 4 to 5 hours from Ayodhya on the other side, and Prayagraj is around 3 hours. Our Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi package runs the whole loop over four days and picks up from Lucknow.
