Hanuman Garhi, Ayodhya: Why You Visit First
Ask anyone in Ayodhya where to start and they will say Hanuman Garhi. It is not the biggest draw in the city and it is not the reason most people travel here, but it is where the local sequence begins, and it takes less than an hour.
What it is
A Hanuman temple on a hillock in the middle of the old city, reached by a flight of around 76 steps. It is among the most important Hanuman temples in India, which is not something you would guess from how quickly visitors pass through it.
If you are travelling with parents, note that the steps are steep. There is help available for those who need it, but budget extra time.
Why it comes first
The tradition in Ayodhya is that you visit Hanuman before Ram. Hanuman is the devotee, and the belief is that his blessing leads you to Ram. So the order is Hanuman Garhi first, then the Ram Mandir.
There is also a thoroughly practical reason the sequence works. Hanuman Garhi is quick, it is close to the other old-city sites, and doing it first means your Ram Mandir slot later is not competing with anything else. Our two-day itinerary is built around that logic.
How long it takes
Allow 30 to 45 minutes. That includes the climb, the darshan and a few minutes at the top. It is not a place you need to plan a half day around.
When to go
Early morning is best. It is cooler, less crowded, and it fits naturally before a Ram Mandir slot. Late afternoon is the alternative, though it is busier.
What to know before you arrive
- You will climb. Around 76 steps up. Slip-on footwear makes the shoe removal at the top easier.
- Photography restrictions apply at many Ayodhya temples. Ask rather than assume.
- Traditional dress is expected in the older temples, though not enforced everywhere.
- Entry is free. Donations are voluntary. If anyone asks you for a fee to enter, that is not normal.
- No fixed timing is quoted here deliberately. Temple hours shift with the season, and a stale timing on a travel page is worse than none. Ask us for current hours for your dates.
Where it sits
Hanuman Garhi is in the old city, within walking distance of Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal. That cluster — Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal — is the most efficient half day in Ayodhya, and our places to visit guide covers all three.
Because cars cannot get close to this part of the city, you will walk the last stretch. That is true of most of central Ayodhya.
Fitting it into your trip
Hanuman Garhi is a fixture on every trip we arrange. It appears in our Ram Mandir VIP Darshan tour, which is built so that the old-city cluster, the Ram Mandir and the Saryu Aarti all fall into one coherent day rather than three separate taxi runs.
If you are travelling with elderly parents, our senior citizen yatra paces this differently, with the vehicle positioned as close as permitted at each stop.
